Smart Spending: 7 Ways to Use Gift Cards Wisely

Expecting a stash of gift cards for the holidays? Better use them wisely.

That's become a little easier, since retailers have eliminated expiration dates and fees that sap the cards' value over time.

Even so, about $5 billion, or about 6 per cent, of what consumers spend on gift cards this year won't be used, including what's lost to fees, according to TowerGroup. That's down from a high of 10 per cent in 2007, said Brian Riley, research director at the financial-services consulting firm.

It's easy to waste those nifty pieces of plastic. You might forget about them by sticking them in a sock drawer, or you might not spend the full amount. But in this tough economy, every penny counts.

"You should treat it like cash and have it be a contribution to something you really need or want," said Laura Gurski, partner in the retail practice of consultant A.T. Kearney.

Turkey Recipes Guaranteed to Please

Turkey Anyone?/Holiday Survival

For something that's such a big deal, turkey is really one of the simplest things to cook. But without the right direction, it can also be remarkably easy to mess up. If not properly timed or prepared, white meat can come out dry; stuffing, whether cooked inside the bird or out, may either be too moist or not moist enough. The solutions (brining, partially cooking the turkey breast-down) are easy to handle if you just have the right instructions. So we've collected recipes to help you make this year's bird the best ever. Each one is either by a chef at the top of their game (Nigella Lawson, Martha Stewart) or guaranteed to please as rated by literally hundreds of users on AllRecipes.com.

Put down the tape dispenser and the wrapping paper. Instead, make your own gift bags this holiday season. They can be done in a snap, and in their homemade splendor, they become part of the gift.

There's a gift bag for every sewing level; if you have sharp scissors and holiday-themed fabric, you're basically ready to go.

Non-sewers can turn to "furoshiki," a Japanese term for a simple square of fabric into which nearly anything can be tied. Crafters who can sew a straight line may want to try a cinched gift bag, while more advanced sewers can tackle something like the "eco-wrap pouch" created by craft blogger Jessica Okui.

This Season, Parents Worrying About Kids' Diets

Pam Vetter's 15-year-old son balked when she told him she was opting for a healthier holiday season this year: fish rather than turkey, fewer carbs and sweets.

He threatened to purchase a turkey, stuffing, potatoes and pies and put together his own traditional meal.

"It's a moral challenge," said Vetter, 44, a nonreligious celebrant in West Hills, Calif., who conducts funerals. She also has a 14-year-old son. "Do you make part of your family angry for the holiday season by cutting out the carbs and sweets?"

Many parents are trying to figure out how to have a healthier holiday without depriving their kids of Christmas cookies, potato latkes and other treats. About a third of American kids are overweight or obese, according to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates.
